Homeowners continue to invest in beautiful outdoors spaces that are extensions of the home

Are you considering a new deck or railing system? Maybe your existing deck needs sprucing up, or perhaps you want to expand your outdoor living space by building a new backyard oasis. While reasons may vary, one thing is certain: There are many decking and railing products on the market and it pays to do your homework.

Here, we check in with decking and railing manufacturers to clock the latest trends, colours and materials, all designed to cap off an inviting outdoor oasis.

At Vista Railing Systems Inc., aluminum picket railing continues to be one of the most popular products. Carol Mussi, the company’s Marketing Manager, feels it’s a classic choice that never goes out of style.

“It’s clean, elegant and versatile enough to work with both traditional and modern homes,” she said. For homeowners looking to preserve their view, Mussi has seen growth in glass railing systems because they do not sacrifice safety, strength, or style.

She added that consumers appreciate the flexibility of Vista’s rail systems. “Both picket and framed glass use the same posts and rails, which means homeowners can update the look of their deck or outdoor space years later, without replacing the entire railing system.”

The deck as an extension of the home continues to trend for 2026, Mussi stated, adding that there is a focus on enhancing outdoor experiences with maximized views. “Clean lines, low maintenance and modern aesthetics remain top priorities.”

Due to its timeless look and ability to complement most home styles, black remains the dominant colour choice for rail systems. “We’re also seeing increased interest in cable railing and frameless glass with spigots and LED lighting, compared to previous years,” she continued.

When asked about new innovations for 2026, Mussi said she is excited about the introduction of two new products. “Our new universal stair bracket is designed to make installation to walls, porch posts, blank posts or other vertical surfaces easier and more versatile. It features a fully adjustable design.”

Vista also launched a new round pipe handrail product designed with both safety and simplicity in mind.

Mussi is very proud of the culture created at Vista Railing Systems, which she says is about a passion to help dealers, contractors, and homeowners succeed.

“Details in the products matter. Our sleek over-the-post design delivers a clean, contemporary appearance, while our patented Snap+Wrap spacer system eliminates visible gaps between pickets for a more professional finish,” she concluded.

Moving to Gillfor Distribution, Matt Lipskey, National Program Director, said the 2026 decking season is shaping up around a familiar theme. “Homeowners want premium looks and long-term value, even as budgets tighten. As decks increasingly rival kitchens and baths as the renovation of choice, that combination is continuously steering buyers towards composite.”

Lipskey said the most popular products are at the accessible end of TimberTech’s lineup, accounting for nearly half of overall sales. “It’s the natural landing spot for buyers stepping up from pressure-treated wood, without sticker shock.”

Homeowners craving the richest, most realistic and natural looks are the ones most attracted to the premium product lines, he observed. “Decks aren’t an afterthought anymore. They’re an extension of the home, with budgets to match. Once a homeowner understands the long-term math of low-maintenance composite over wood, the conversation changes.”

Colour is where things start to get interesting in 2026, added Lipskey. “Deep, warm tones are dominating. Dark Cocoa, Sea Salt Grey and Coconut Husk are among the top sellers.”

Dark browns and greys together are making up roughly half of all colour-group volume. Lipskey noted that as Scandinavian-inspired palettes trending indoors move outside, lighter neutrals like Natural White Oak are gaining traction. “Across every price point, the through-line is realism: multi-tonal streaking and embossed grain that reads as wood from the curb, but never needs staining or sealing.”

Railing for a deck is not always required, but is often desired. Lipskey said TimberTech’s Impression Rail Express (IRX), a pre-welded, panelized aluminum system, has become a favourite for its clean and modern profile, multiple infill options and fast install. “The panels arrive factory-assembled with concealed fasteners and standardized posts.”

Lipskey feels this year’s most significant innovation won’t be on the deck surface at all. It will be underneath it.

“TimberTech is introducing aluminum framing for 2027, a genuine category shift,” he explained. “A 2×8 aluminum joist carries like a 2×12 wood joist, opening up longer spans, fewer posts and dramatic cantilevers.”

Plus, aluminum won’t rot, warp or corrode, and carries a Class A flame-spread rating with a lifetime limited warranty on major components. “And it is made from recycled aluminum that’s fully recyclable at end of life.”

Lipskey said decking is a crowded field, and he is proud that TimberTech consistently earns the top spot in Canadian brand preference. “That standing rests on real substance: Roughly 80 per cent recycled content in capped composite, warranties spanning 25 to 50 years, and an R&D pipeline that brings new colours and technologies to market quickly.”

Goodfellow Inc. has a long history in the building materials industry, spanning well over 100 years. Jeff Morrison, Executive Vice President at Goodfellow, said the company’s most popular composite decking products for 2026 are Fiberon’s Goodlife series and EvaLast’s Apex Plus.

“Really, there are two types of buyers in 2026: those purchasing entry level price point composite and those purchasing high end composite,” he said. The Goodlife series represents the former, and Apex Plus represents the latter. There is weaker demand for the mid-level composites, he stated.

Morrison also sees a difference between top-end and entry-level composite where colour is concerned. Entry-level composite decking sales lean towards standard colours in brown and grey, while consumers choosing premium decking demand a more tailored look.

“In the higher-end lines, consumer demand is for premium-looking decking. The deck design usually incorporates premium colours with a different colour picture frame to create a one-of-a-kind look.”

To complete the deck design, Morrison said Fortress Aluminum Railing is a popular choice, with black standard rails being the most common choice.

In general, Morrison believes aluminum railing is a pretty standard product, but there are differences between brands. “I feel ours sells well because it is a panelized system. The panels and posts are pre-welded with pre-assembled attaching points to facilitate installation, simplify the order, and offer quality without play in the bars, he explained.

Eva-Last is a relatively new decking line offered in Canada, continued Morrison. Eva-Last Apex Plus and Pioneer lines offer a composite wrapped PVC deck re-enforced with fiberglass mesh. “Rich colours and unique embossing provide a visually stunning board, with superior slip resistance and strength with minimized expansion and contraction.”

For those searching for the real look of exotic hardwood decking, Morrison suggests the Pioneer line, due to its digitally printed wrapped board.

Outdoor living spaces continue to be one of the most valuable investments homeowners can make, according to Kevin Olson, Director National Accounts, Doman Building Materials.

“Across Canada, demand is growing for decking and railing systems that combine premium aesthetics, long-term durability, and low maintenance,” he said. Decks, patios, and balconies are seen as extensions of the indoor living space by an increasing number of homeowners, he observed.

Olson sees homeowners moving beyond simple deck installations. “One of the strongest trends shaping the market in 2026 is the desire for outdoor spaces that feel polished, customized and connected to the home’s overall design.”

Premium composite and PVC products continue to gain popularity for decking projects. “Consumers seek the appearance of natural wood without the upkeep associated with traditional lumber.”

Olson said TimberTech’s Vintage Collection remains a leading choice for Doman. “The collection delivers the rich look of tropical hardwoods while offering exceptional resistance to fading, staining and moisture.”

He has also noticed another major trend on the rise: lighter, more natural wood tones that complement contemporary home styles to create bright, inviting outdoor spaces.

Sustainability is another factor that continues to influence purchasing decisions. “There is a growing interest in products that incorporate recycled content, require minimal maintenance, and offer long service lives,” said Olson. Sophisticated deck designs are also gaining traction as homeowners seek custom designs.

“Multi-width board layouts, hyper-realistic wood grain patterns, matte finishes and natural colour variation are increasingly popular.”

Traditional picket railing remains a favourite for decks, stairs, and balconies. Olson says its clean appearance, durability, and ease of installation appeals to consumers and contractors alike. “Railing systems are evolving alongside decking to support these design goals. Century Aluminum Railings continues to see strong demand for its component picket and scenic glass railing systems.”

Although black and neutral finishes continue to dominate, the ability to customize is also driving railing choices. “Mixed-system designs are becoming more common, with homeowners combining glass railing along view-facing deck edges, picket railing on stairways, and privacy or wind walls around dining, seating and hot tub areas,” Olson stated.

Continuing with railings, Olson points to Century Railings’ complete family of products. “Railings, gates, fencing, privacy walls and wind walls allows builders and homeowners to create cohesive outdoor spaces using systems designed to work together.”

Innovation remains a key driver across both decking and railing categories, including TimberTech’s Advanced PVC decking featuring Cool Touch Technology, which helps provide a cooler walking surface.

“Also, ongoing advancements in embossing and colour blending continue to improve the realism of wood-look decking.”

Regal Ideas Inc. specializes in modular, future-ready aluminum railing systems, said Andrew Pantelides, the company’s Executive Vice President and President of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA).

Whether a family grows, there is a change in lifestyle, or an outdoor space requires renovation, Regal Ideas’ rail system doesn’t require a complete replacement, he explained.

“Homeowners can simply replace the infill with glass, add integrated LED lighting, upgrade post cap designs, or incorporate decorative accessories, all while using the same core railing framework.”

Clean sightlines and premium outdoor living spaces continue to trend. Now available in textured black, Crystal Rail, a frameless glass system, has become increasingly popular, said Pantelides. “Homeowners are looking for railing systems that provide safety without sacrificing the view.”

The addition of integrated LED lighting is one of Regal’s fastest-growing product categories, he continued.

For ease of installation and time conservation, Pantelides pointed to the Urban Rail system as one of their most sought-after products, due to the panels arriving factory-assembled for a dramatically faster installation than traditional stick-built railing systems.

“Ultimately, our most popular products are those that provide homeowners with the flexibility to personalize their outdoor living spaces without having to start over.”

Consumers are continuing to invest in creating outdoor spaces that feel like a true extension of their home with an emphasis on sophisticated modern designs that combine durability and low maintenance, observed Pantelides. “Dark colours continue to dominate, with textured matte black leading the way as homeowners gravitate towards rich, architectural finishes that complement today’s popular exterior materials.”

The premium appearance of textured powder-coated finishes accounts for their popularity, with the added bonus that they help to conceal fingerprints, dirt and everyday wear.

“Our advanced powder-coated finishes provide exceptional durability and long-lasting colour retention. They are designed to withstand harsh North American climates with minimal maintenance,” said Pantelides.

“We’re also seeing a growing demand for mixed-material designs. Aluminum paired with glass remains one of the fastest-growing combinations, while frameless glass systems continue to gain momentum.”

Integrated LED lighting is another area of continued innovation, as lighting has become an essential design feature rather than simply a functional accessory. “Our lighting systems are designed to integrate seamlessly into the railing, providing both safety and ambiance without visible wiring or bulky fixtures.”

In a document provided to Build & Reno Magazine, Trex Company weighed in on decking trends for 2026.

Warm neutrals are taking over with a shift away from cool greys, said the composite decking manufacturer. Trex has seen a shift to Earth-inspired colours such as its Transcend Lineage colour, Biscayne, the company’s 2026 Colour of the Year, which brings a softer, more natural look.

New on the market is Trex Refuge; Trex’s first PVC deck board.

“When it comes to wildfire safety, every material choice matters,” wrote a company spokesperson. “Trex’s International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) Ignition Resistant and Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) compliant decking is designed to meet strict fire standards while delivering the beauty and durability you expect.”

As we move through the summer of 2026, decking and railing trends revolve around creating outdoor rooms with a view. Creative options help homeowners design personalized, unique decks that emphasize their individuality, while outdoor colour trends are shifting alongside the interior design industry.

One thing’s for sure: It’s an exciting time to be considering an outdoor renovation.
